The statements in the video illustrate the many facets of good leadership.

“You have to be a role model.” – “Self-reflection should always come first.” – “It takes open communication.” – “The needs of employees vary greatly.” – “People can learn to be good leaders.”

These statements are taken from UZH’s video on leadership and management. They highlight the many facets of being a good leader and illustrate that good management is a crucial part of achieving goals together. It is the cornerstone of mutual trust and cooperation and helps create a productive, professional working environment.

Continuing education and advisory services

UZH fosters good leadership and management by providing a comprehensive range of continuing education courses and support services. These offers are coordinated across the university and developed on an ongoing basis. The university supports all leaders and managers in their various tasks, providing not only knowledge and practical skills but also giving them opportunities to share their experiences and discuss leadership issues.

These programs and services are aimed at professors or research group leaders, project managers, department or institute heads and managers of administrative units, among others. They are geared towards employees who have recently taken on a leadership role at UZH as well as seasoned managers.

Lively dialogue on good leadership

To lead effectively, people in leadership roles also need their teams to get involved and share feedback. “A healthy leadership culture is the result of a joint process. That’s why it is so important for leaders and their team members to discuss leadership matters,” says Vice President Christian Schwarzenegger.

The UZH Leadership and Management Principles, which were updated in 2024, provide guidance when discussing good leadership. They are structured around three contexts: Leading Yourself, Leading Others, and Leading and Managing Organizational Units. Key elements include taking responsibility, focusing on solutions, fostering a feedback culture, thinking ahead, using resources sparingly, and promoting gender equality, equal opportunities and inclusion.

The principles are binding on all leaders and managers at UZH. But they also matter to employees who aren’t in leadership positions, as they provide a point of reference for engaging in an ongoing dialogue about leadership.

Because leadership and management concern everyone.
