Europe’s Future

What will it take for Europe to succeed in the future? The latest issue of the UZH Magazin explores this question by drawing on UZH researchers’ insights into the current state of the world. What emerges is that Europe needs to get its act together if it wants to hold its own and tackle major global issues.

The world order is shifting before our eyes. Europe has come under pressure from all sides. Russia’s aggressive actions are threatening European security and defying international law. The new/old US president is undermining transatlantic alliances, and China is offering fierce competition in the high-tech and automotive sectors. Meanwhile, in many European countries populist authoritarian parties are attempting to weaken democratic structures and the rule of law.

Where does Europe figure in all this? What can the Old Continent do to assert itself in this game of shifting powers? How can the prosperity and security of Europeans be maintained? In the new UZH Magazin, researchers from different disciplines discuss these questions, drawing on historical, political, legal, economic and environmental perspectives.

Quantum physics and multilingual Switzerland

As always, the magazine also features articles on a range of other topics, including a look at the changing linguistic landscape in Switzerland, an interview with UZH physicist Titus Neupert on the occasion of the UN’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology in 2025, and a portrait of the lawyer and UZH alumna Cordelia Bähr, who was instrumental in helping the KlimaSeniorinnen organization take the Swiss government to the European Court of Human Rights. A selection of articles will be published here in English over the coming weeks. Happy reading!
