  • Happy birthday! At the Alumni & Family event in June 2016, Michael Hengartner is given a cake for his 50th birthday. The laughing worm is a reference to his success as a molecular biologist: Using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, Hengartner researched what mechanisms lead, for example, to a cell with damaged genetic material destroying itself and why this mechanism often no longer works in cancer cells. In 2006 he received the prestigious Latsis Prize for his research.

  • Hitting the bullseye: For more than 20 years, the leadership teams of UZH and ETH Zurich have got together every year for the “Rektorenschiessen.” This picture was taken in July 2016, when Sarah Springman, Rector of ETH, narrowly beat Michael Hengartner to first place. In his final “Rektorenschiessen” in summer 2019, he even came out on top, but unfortunately there are no pictures of his victory.

In September 2018, the Executive Board of the University visited the Innovation Park in Dübendorf, where the UZH Space Hub conducts parabolic flights to research the effects of weightlessness.
